Today was filled with a plethora of conversations. I had an awesome 15 min convo with my friend Kristin from class who went to Honduras for Spring Break to do medical missions. She was living one of my dreams so I was quite intrigued to hear about her adventures and lessons learned. One thing that she took from the trip was how different the people’s outlook on life is down there (and pretty much elsewhere in any Hispanic/Latin/Spanish speaking country…I don’t know the politically correct term). Anyways, she was talking about how we are so driven and future oriented…always asking, “so where do you see yourself in 5 years?”.
Apparently her translator was talking about the difference in cultural outlook and how he just wants to live in the moment and enjoy what is already before him, instead of worrying about unborn events. People with this mentality in our country are either considered lazy, un-driven, apathetic, or at most…a revolutionary (ie. Chris McCandless from Into the Wild). But why should wanting to live in the moment be so revolutionary. Our brothers and sisters to the south have grasped a small glimpse of what this wise man uttered 100’s of times to 12 stubborn teenagers and thousands of passersby. “Do not be afraid”…”do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will take care of itself”. Maybe he meant what he said and thought it might make our lives easier….so why do we daily ignore such healing and reassuring words?
